A dental implant consists of a crown placed on a titanium post. The post is surgically placed into the jawbone where the natural bone eventually grows around it once it is healed, a crown shaped like the original tooth is placed on top so that it looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. Dental implants can perform a variety of functions. They can be used to replace a single missing tooth or to secure dentures, a bridge, or a crown. Dental implants have an extremely high success rate which makes them such a great choice. Here are some things you may want to know about implants before visiting with Dr. Daniel Araldi at Saratoga Dentistry.
How will my teeth look and feel?
A dental implant replaces the natural root of your natural tooth, so your gum tissue and jawbone remain intact and healthy. You may have just one implant, or you may have several dental implants. They are the only tooth replacement solution that prevents jawbone resorption also known as bone loss. They will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. The long-term aesthetic effect is far superior to other tooth replacement options.
How long does it take to complete a dental implant?
It can take a few weeks or longer to complete a dental implant. It will depend on the quality of your jawbone. In some instances, bone must be grafted in to ensure the jawbone is strong enough to support the implant. If you need the additional procedure, it can take six months to complete. However, for some patients, same-day implants are an option. Dr. Araldi can discuss your options if you are a candidate for dental implants.
How long does an implant last?
Dental implants are designed to be a permanent solution. However, some factors can ensure their long-term success. Proper oral hygiene and regular checkups with Saratoga Dentistry help ensure it is successful. In most cases, dental implants will last the rest of your life.
Do dental implants need special care?
You will be able to clean and care for implants just like you do your natural teeth. They need regular brushing and flossing. You’ll also need to keep your routine exams with Dr. Araldi.
How is an implant placed?
To place a dental implant, an incision is made into the gum. A small drill “taps” the jawbone where the implant will be placed. The implant is screwed into place. The gums are closed, healing begins. It can take three to six months for the implant to fuse with the bone so that a sturdy base exists for the new tooth. When it has healed totally, an abutment is attached to the implant. Then the natural-looking crown is placed.
Is the process painful?
For most implant patients, there is not a lot of discomfort. Usually, it’s not any more uncomfortable than getting a root canal or having a tooth extraction. You will be anesthetized during the procedure. While each person’s tolerance of pain is different, most people say taking over-the-counter pain medications takes care of any pain.
